The fish called Pai was shy but curious. Pai’s story began in Taiwan and then continued in an aquarium of a medical centre and a contemporary art museum in Turku, Finland. A parrot-cichlid hybrid, Pai was a human-produced being. These cute looking artificial fish have many anatomical abnormalities. Pai was originally bright orange, but as it got sick it became pale. Hertta built a new bright environment for Pai in the museum’s aquarium and Pai perked up and got back some of its colour. However, last November Pai passed away.
On an unusually warm Sunday in May, a loving funeral ritual was performed for Pai on the Yyteri beach in Finland. The palmful of ash that was left of Pai is now spreading as fine particles across the Bothnian Sea, and perhaps even further. From the waves and sand empathy emerges alongside the dystopias. Hertta’s work is based on the notion that empathy may be a way to dissolve the imaginary border between humans and nature. It can stop the culture of repression and instrumentalization and act as a bridge towards a more compassionate and fair coexistence.
