As spring starts unfolding, Mareike Dobewall’s sound installation invites listeners to experience the sonic environment of the Sibelius Museum through human voices. The familiar and the unfamiliar meet over construction sounds, car engines, church bells, birds, and helicopters. They emerge not as we know them, but reimagined and embodied in vocal performance.
This site-sensitive installation is a response to the museum’s surrounding environment, recorded in March 2025. The sounds are not merely played back—they are interpreted, transformed, and performed by four vocal artists. Through vocal recreation and sonic interpretation, the singers explore the porous boundary between the human voice and environmental sounds. What happens when the voice is the medium that reconnects us to the world we live in?
At the heart of the installation is a subtle invitation—not only to listen, but to co-exist. A bird bath placed within the atrium offers a chance for avian visitors to interact with the space, should they choose. Their potential absence is not a failure, but a moment of reflection: How do the spaces we create welcome, or exclude, other forms of life?
Mareike Dobewall is a Stockholm-based artist whose practice spans sound art, scenography, and performance. She is currently artist-in-residence at Titanik Gallery. Her PhD research, Voicelanding, explored the scenographic potential of acoustic sound in site-sensitive performance, a theme that continues to echo throughout her work. Her current artistic research project Winter’s Silence – Searching for a Music of a Hibernating Forest is supported by the Kone Foundation.
Frequencies is a sonic living room for the residents and visitors of Turku. Visit the Atrium of the Sibelius Museum and enjoy experimental music free of charge by five international sound artists hosted at Titanik A.i.R. artist residency, funded by the Finnish Cultural Foundation.

Kevään koitteessa Mareike Dobewallin ääni-installaatio kutsuu kokemaan, kuinka Sibelius-museon ääniympäristö avautuu ihmisäänten välityksellä. Tuttu ja tuntematon kohtaavat, kun saamme kuulla rakentamisen, autojen, kirkonkellojen, lintujen ja helikopterien ääniä. Ne eivät tule esiin tuntemamme kaltaisina vaan ilmenevät laulusuorituksiin ruumiillistuneina tulkintoina.
Paikkasidonnainen installaatio reagoi museon lähiympäristöön ja on äänitetty maaliskuussa 2025. Taltioituja ääniä ei vain toisteta, vaan neljä laulajaa tulkitsee, muuntaa ja esittää ne. Laulajat tutkivat ihmisäänen ja ympäristön äänten välistä huokoista rajaa äänellisen luomistyön keinoin. Mitä tapahtuu, kun ääni yhdistää meidät uusin tavoin maailmaan, jossa elämme?
Installaation ytimessä on hienovarainen kutsu – paitsi kuuntelemaan myös elämään yhdessä. Atriumpihalle sijoitettu lintukylpy tarjoaa siivekkäille vierailijoille mahdollisuuden vuorovaikutukseen tilan kanssa, jos ne tätä tahtovat. Jos linnut eivät saavu, käsillä ei ole epäonnistuminen vaan pohdinnan hetki: Miten luomamme tilat toivottavat muut elämänmuodot tervetulleiksi tai sulkevat ne pois?
Mareike Dobewall on Tukholmassa asuva taiteilija, joka työskentelee äänitaiteen, lavastuksen ja esiintymisen parissa. Hän on tällä hetkellä Titanik-gallerian residenssitaiteilija. Dobewallin väitöstutkimus Voicelanding tutki akustisen äänen mahdollisuuksia paikkasidonnaisissa esityksissä, mikä on hänen teostensa toistuva teema. Dobewallin nykyistä taiteellista tutkimushanketta Winter’s Silence – Searching for a Music of a Hibernating Forest tukee Koneen säätiö.
Frequencies – Taajuuksia on ääniaaltojen täyttämä olohuone turkulaisille ja Turussa vieraileville. Sibelius-museon atriumpihalla voi nauttia maksutta kokeellisesta musiikista, jota esittävät Titanik A.i.R. -taiteilijaresidenssin viisi kansainvälistä äänitaiteilijaa Suomen Kulttuurirahaston tukemana.
