ARMA Alliance invites you to the screening of short films “Revelations” (2018) directed by Laura Eklund Nhaga and “Colour Anxiety” (2018) directed by Shareef Askar. Both staring Laura Eklund Nhaga, the films touch on various topics such as mental health, loneliness, and anti-Black racism in predominantly white spaces in Finland.
About “Revelations”: a documentary that deals with the themes of mental health, suicide and friendship. Creator Laura Eklund Nhaga interviewed three of her friends on her own relationship with the idea of suicide, and recorded their thoughts. The result is a touching, and surprisingly hopeful collection of thoughts by real people about real struggles.
About “Colour Anxiety”: At a house party on a summer night, Laura is surrounded by guests that happen to be very curious about who she is, causing a stream of conflicting emotions about her identity and sense of belonging.
The screenings will be followed by a Q&A with the directors and actor on the filmmaking process, the choice of film as a medium to explore personal and social issues and Black women’s (self-)representation in film.
The event will end with a panel discussion between Monica Gathuo, Milka Njoroge, Laura Eklund Nhaga, moderated by Saba Holm in which the audience and panel members will reflect on Black women in Finnish media in a context of normalised racism, xenophobia and sexism.
Laura Eklund Nhaga is an actress, activist, a spokenword poet and a student of sociology.
